using lit practice/game fields

Please note rules for PG Turf and UBC fields

There are many variables involved in putting together an equitable schedule for very limited field space in a way that accommodates special requests as much as possible while remaining fair to all. For more information, be sure to read lit field allocation process, and our practice field FAQs.

LOCATION
The fields are located to the West, just off the East Mall, between 16th Avenue (to the South) and Thunderbird Blvd. (to the North).
Downlad the PDF of the Rules for details re: access and parking.

DSA will be using two fields:

  • Varsity field is the larger of the two fields and is located to the East of the field hockey turf field.
  • Warren field is the smaller field and is located West of the field hockey turf field (i.e. closest to the East Mall).

RULES

  1. It is the responsibility of the home team to leave the field and surrounding area clean.
  2. Alcohol is not permitted, unless a liquor permit is in effect.
  3. Prior to entering the field, all foreign material must be cleaned off turf shoes.
  4. The following items are not allowed on turf fields at any time: food, gum, tobacco products, sunflower seeds, beverages (water in plastic bottles is ok), pets, tents with spikes and footwear with metal cleats or screw-in plastic cleats. (Appropriate tents should be set up off to the side so spectator views are not blocked).
  5. Dogs are not allowed on the UBC sports field at any time.
  6. Garbage including picnic and concession materials must be put in garbage containers or taken away.
  7. Please note that closed means CLOSED! Any person using a closed field will be liable for repairs. Any team or group found playing on a closed field may lose their permits and/or be subject to fines.
  8. Each field (Warren & Varsity) will have a storage box with corner flags and spare nets. These boxes will be locked with the Dunbar / Point Grey lock.

It is the DSA home team’s responsibility to make sure the visiting team abides by these rules. If you are having difficulty with players, parents or spectators who are not following these rules, or you need the DSA executive to help educate or enforce these rules, please let us know. Please report all violations or maintenance issues to Steve Engh (at: sengh@shaw.ca). Failure to follow these rules may result in the DSA forfeiting its use of the UBC Turf Field field. Please download the PDF of the rules and circulate to visiting teams for games.

POINT GREY TURF FIELD
Rules for the use of the field during practices and games
Approved by the DSA Board of Directors, September 2009

** The DSA is pleased to announce Dunbar Soccer has added a new volunteer role to assist in maintaining controls and monitoring of the PG Turf facility. Effective immediately Rick Wong will act as "Turf Monitor" on behalf of the youth soccer clubs. Rick will periodically drop in at the facility to review how the users are doing, and report any problems to Steve Engh.

Please send a copy of these rules to the visiting team before your scheduled game. You can download a PDF version here.

  1. No spectators are allowed on the track or on the turf sidelines during a practice or a game. Only coaches and players are allowed on the turf. All others are to be in the stands or outside the fencing, except on an emergency basis (i.e. potential or actual player injury).
  2. During a game, no more than 3 coaches and a team’s substitute players are permitted on the turf sidelines. A player who is not dressed to play may also sit with the team.
  3. Teams may use only team benches on the turf. No tents or canopies are permitted, unless there is 9 feet (3 meters) of clearance from the sideline. At no time may a team bench or canopy sit or be placed on the track surface.
  4. Avoid placing team benches in front of the spectator stands. They should be moved down closer to either of the end zones so teams do not block the view from the stands.
  5. Only water is allowed on the field. Juices, energy drinks, mid-game snacks or any food, etc. must be kept and consumed off the field (e.g. in the spectator area or stands).
  6. The home team is responsible to ensure that their and their opponent’s areas are clean and neat after each game. Please pick up all your litter and any other litter you see. Garbage cans are located next to the spectator stands.

It is the DSA home team’s responsibility to make sure the visiting team abides by these rules. If you are having difficulty with players, parents or spectators who are not following these rules, or you need the DSA executive to help educate or enforce these rules, please let us know. Please report all violations or maintenance issues to Steve Engh. Failure to follow these rules may result in the DSA forfeiting its use of the PG Turf field.

EQUIPMENT:
• The portable goal posts should now be stored in the end zone at the end of the field after the last practice or league game. Please ensure that they are pushed right up against the fence.
• Corner flags are to be stored in the two metal black boxes at each end of the field. Please make sure you lock them when you leave.
• The DSA teams are no longer locking the four goal posts that belong to the youth soccer clubs.

LIGHTS:
Lights should be turned off if there is no one present when you finish. We are on probation with the light times. The Park Board has received concerns from neighbours regarding lights being on when the field is not in use. For now 505001# turns them on and 505001* turn them off. Each code is good for a two hour block so when you arrive put your code in before the next group has ended. Please do not leave lights on when you leave if there is no other permitted user.

WASHROOMS:
For now Park Board have the rink staff opening the outdoor washrooms but it is in the process of having combo locks put on. There will be dressing rooms available in the future as well.

Queen Elizabeth and Southlands lit fields:

Start Date - You can start using the lit fields as of Oct 1 but you may stay on your grass field as long as the natural light and the weather hold. Please DO NOT practice on grass if the field is closed or if it is mushy and/or with standing water. Check the Parks Board Field Status.

Using the Lights - The lights are on an automatic timer. This means that they are operational only during preset times. (Southlands 5:00 - 9:00) (Q.E. 4:00 - 9:30) The lights will not come on automatically. If you are the one to turn on the lights, you must open the box and press the ON button. PLEASE BE SURE TO LOCK THE BOX IMMEDIATELY AFTER TURNING ON THE LIGHTS. The key to open the boxes is the same one that gives you access to all Dunbar boxes.

At Southlands, the coach's box is located on the south side of the kiosk which is near the fence, directly behind the east goal. If you are the last team to use the field and it is before 9:00, please reopen the coach's box and hit the OFF button to turn the lights off.

At Queen Elizabeth, the coach's box is on the east side of the kiosk which is located on the northeast aspect of the field. Please note that there is no OFF button but the lights will turn off automatically at 9:30 PM.

Read the attached “Commonly asked Questions“ document for more details about turning on the lights and using the lit field.

Access and Parking - Dunbar Soccer Association has an agreement with the Park Board and the VSB regarding the use of the fields. For Southlands, parents are asked to access Camosun via 33rd Ave. or 41st Ave. when dropping players off or picking up. For QE, parents are asked to drop off and pick up on 16th Ave. - Camosun Street may NOT be used. PLEASE photocopy the Parking Policy hand-outs for parents from the Dunbar website. PLEASE STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF ABIDING BY THESE GUIDELINES. Failure to do so may lead to suspension of practicing privileges. Respecting the neighbours will help us continue to be welcome in the neighbourhood! More details on the parking can be viewed and printed.
